Manz Lab

The Manz Lab is an environmental chemistry research group that aims to holistically understand how chemicals interact and behave in both environmental and biological systems. Our research integrates cutting-edge analytical chemistry techniques, including high-resolution mass spectrometry, to monitor chemical transformations in groundwater, soils, and biological matrices. By bridging environmental and human exposure sciences, we aim to advance our understanding of chemical fate while developing innovative approaches to assess total human exposure to environmental chemicals.

Our Values

Diversity & Inclusion

We are committed to creating an inclusive and equitable environment that embraces diverse backgrounds and cultures. We actively support and welcome underrepresented scientists, including women, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and immigrants.

Growth & Outreach

Our lab is committed to providing all members with opportunities for personal and professional growth. We foster a culture of learning and teaching that thrives on curiosity and open-mindedness. Beyond our scientific endeavors, we are dedicated to making a positive impact on our broader communities through outreach and volunteering. In doing so, we strive to become not only better scientists but also better individuals.

Integrity & Innovation

We are committed to advancing the scientific community through collaborative and interdisciplinary innovations. Upholding ethics and integrity is central to our mission, reflected in the quality of our data and the honest presentation of our results. We ensure that our work is rigorous and reproducible, maintaining the highest standards in all our research endeavors.

Respect & Communication

In our lab, we are dedicated to respecting every individual, regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, culture, or personal beliefs. We aim to create a welcoming space where everyone feels encouraged to share ideas, ask questions, and learn from one another through open and honest communication. Understanding that communication styles vary, we are committed to cultivating an environment where every voice can be heard and valued. By taking turns to speak and listening attentively without interruption, we not only improve our work but also enrich our lab culture.

Health & Safety

The health and safety of our lab members are our top priorities. While we follow the safety guidelines set by EH&S and our school, we also understand that maintaining a safe environment is a shared responsibility. We encourage and empower all lab members to voice any safety or health concerns without hesitation. Cleanliness and organization are essential for a safe workspace—always leave the lab as you found it, and promptly communicate any necessary exceptions.

Teamwork & Support

We are dedicated to uplifting our colleagues and fostering a supportive environment characterized by kindness, patience, and humility. Each of us will take on roles of both leadership and followership, always with the well-being of our team as our focus. We celebrate accomplishments together and approach challenges with supportive and collaborative solutions.

Mentorship

We prioritize mentorship by making thoughtful commitments to the growth and development of our team members. We emphasize the importance of clear communication regarding needs and goals, and we approach the process of building
mentoring relationships with intentionality, care, and kindness. Our aim is to foster a supportive and collaborative environment where every member can thrive and excel.

Accountability

Mistakes are a natural part of learning and the scientific process. We commit to taking responsibility for our mistakes, openly communicating them, and addressing them constructively. When faced with uncertainty or doubt, we actively seek clarity by asking questions.
